Naples Archeological Museum
This is one the oldest and most important museums in the world for its unique richness in the cultural panorama of Europe. It houses a great variety of collections from various time periods. Most of the collections are connected to Charles III of Bourbon, who sat on the throne of the Kingdom of Naples from 1734. He promoted the pursuit of culture and the excavation of the cities buried by the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The excavations started in 1738 in Herculaneum and in 1748 in Pompei. He supervised the birth of the Farnesian Museum, transferring part of a rich collection of artefacts inherited from his mother Elisabetta Farnese from Rome and Parma. His son Ferdinand IV then unified the museum with artefacts from the excavations around Vesuvius in the present day building, which was once a seat of the University.
